hearthstone's adventures are the best. They're clever and often hilarious solo challenges that offer a nice respite from the grind of competitive multiplayer while adding in a host of new cards.

hearthstone's latest adventure is One Night in Karazhan - a series of missions set in the wizard Medivh's tower. WarCraft enthusiasts will remember him as the wizard who was partly responsible for bringing the Orcish horde to Azeroth before later redeeming himself. Here he's a happy-go-lucky magician who likes to host parties in his Beauty and the Beast-like fortress.

In the tradition of previous adventures, One Night in Karazhan's story is split into four parts, with a new wing being released each week. Unlike the normal card expansions, though, One Night in Karazhan is not free. Instead, you can purchase each wing for $6.99 apiece, or all four wings for $19.99. If you prefer, you can also buy each wing for 700 gold apiece.

In return, you're guaranteed 45 new card including several legendaries, as well as several challenges. The solo adventures are typically where Blizzard gets creative with its design, and One Night in Karazhan is no exception. While the first couple challenges are somewhat sedate battles against a pile of living dishes and a magic mirror, the third one is a clever chess match that deprives you of your customized decks and forces you to think hard about positioning.

In the chess match, your cards become chess pieces, each with a different method of attacking. Knights can attack directly, while pawns, queens, and rooks attack passively for varying amounts of damage. The challenge also makes use of the much-lauded Discovery mechanic, allowing you to spend two mana to choose from three random pieces. You can't overwhelm the computer with high-powered cards, so you have to arrange them in such a way that they can do the maximum amount of damage.

It doesn't quite live up to the brilliant mine cart ride from League of Explorers, but it's still a pretty fun batch of missions. Best of all, the first battle - which sets up Medivh's unexpected departure - is available for free as a demo for everyone to try.

So far Blizzard's adventures have all been excellent, with even the worst of them - Blackrock Mountain - still being quite fun and offering solid rewards. With that, I'd say that they're worth buying even if you're a more casual hearthstone fan. In addition to offering a host of guaranteed cards, they put a unique spin on _hearthstone that keeps it fresh and interesting. There's little reason to doubt that One Night in Karazhan will be any different.

What you can get from the first wing

Third cards are available in the first wing. Some can be earned by defeating the missions themselves, while others can be obtained by defeating the class challenges that accompany each wing. The Shaman and Priest are featured in the first wing. You can find the cards above.

Looking at the cards that appear in this wing, Enchanted Raven is a nice 2/2 body for the Druid that interacts very well with various spells like Mark of Y'Shaarj. Otherwise, though, none of the cards really stand out. The real winners won't be coming until later, with powerful cards like Onyx Biship and Medivh still waiting in the wings.
